FLOSS software in the national interest.

Tomasz Rychlicki @ 12.07.2006

You may read that in the report from the Department of Defense's Advanced Systems and Concepts Office. All document is avaliable on www.acq.osd.mil website (PDF file). I think those are very interesting conclusions. Simply the whole FLOSS idea is dedicated pro publico bono. I think that world/countires economy just needs more single and medium enterprises based on what the FLOSS movement has to offer. The FSF, OSI and a lot of businesses and individuals are slowly and since a long time tipping the scale of ideas (among other things ideas of copyright law) about software in favour of free/libre and open source software. In my humble opinion it is in the interest of individuals (as consumers and businesses) and any other values.

"Buggy" AACS.

Tomasz Rychlicki @ 08.07.2006

Advanced Access Content System is a content protection system for Blu-ray Disc i HD DVD technologies. It has a "bug" which allows without any problem to circumvent this protection. More details in the article on www.heise-security.co.uk website. Anyway, Lech Johansen is ready to break the AACS as he did with CSS. Is there still anybody who wants to opt-in for DRM solutions if even its creators can not deal with it? I do not care if the DRM term is proper one. It does not work. The same applies to the law which protects such "rights".

Three people, employees of the Coca-Cola Company, have been arrested and charged with "stealing" trade secrets about drink recipes from The Coca-Cola Co. and trying to sell it to the competitor, PepsiCo Inc. Read the article on www.cnn.com website. "Theft" of trade secrets is a federal crime. Trade secrets laws are unified/regulated in the Uniform Trade Secrets Act (adopted in almost 40 states). "Theft" of trade secrets is prosecuted based on the Economic Espionage Act of 1996 (Pub. L. 104-294 (October 11, 1996), 110 Stat. 3488. Title 18, U.S.C. §§1831-1839.)

"Racist" commercial from Sony

Tomasz Rychlicki @ 05.07.2006
