Music based on sharing.
Tomasz Rychlicki @ 11.05.2005
I'm not an expert in music issues but its commonly known that rap beats are often based on sampling from exsisting works. I have no idea how is the situation on our local Polish music market where there are big problems with massive piracy, but anyway it is dominated by hip hop/rap music, but in States first troubles with licencing issues have had The 2 Live Crew. Check the case from The US Supreme Court, CAMPBELL, aka SKYYWALKER, et al. v. ACUFF ROSE MUSIC, INC. It was about the right to parody of the music piece too. On www.washingtonpost.com website You may find an article dated on 8th May about problems in the rap business when it comes to sampling from rap works. Those whos music is based on "sharing" are starting to protect in a very "hard" way their copyrights. I recommend You readind the case Positive Black Talk v. Cash Money Records which is cited in the article. Pay Your atention to the dictum. And at the end of this news I must write that those problems were described by J-Mario in the article "Ruff Ryders" in DosDedos no 13 from year 2000. and this magazine accidentally came into my hands today.

I wouldn't mention this case any more probably not to fill this page with news from mixed issues (criminal and copyright law) but the article on www.bbc.co.uk website says that there were 3 persons sentenced from this warez group (Drink or die), but the article on www.gazeta.pl website (in Polish) says there were 4 persons. They cite their news from the information on www.reuters.com. To whom should I trust? ;) After the chat on iCQ with me Piotr Waglowski on his website www.vagla.pl described this problem too.
